I divide under-eye ageing into two categories: bags and darkness. I fall into the darkness category, specifically dark circles.
Apart from fillers, dark circles can’t be completely eliminated due to the natural ageing process and the delicate, thin skin around the eyes.
Staying hydrated helps, though. I always notice my dark circles are less noticeable when I’ve had plenty of water—at least a litre and a half a day.
While I can conceal them with makeup, I prefer to improve their appearance as much as possible without constantly relying on cosmetics.
I love eye creams, but they usually come in small tubes, so I often switch between different ones. At the moment, I’m on the lookout for one with copper peptides. But when they do work, they tend to soften crow’s feet rather than address darkness.
I do have one tip—and it’s free. When applying eye cream, you’re usually advised to gently tap it on with your weakest finger to protect the delicate skin.
However, I’ve found better results by tapping (semi-firmly) with my index, middle, and ring fingers, moving from the outer corners to the inner corners of my eyes. This technique provides an immediate but temporary fix by stimulating blood flow. However, after doing this regularly a few times a day, I’ve noticed it helps reduce discolouration, particularly on the outer half of my under-eye area, enough to make a visible difference.
LUSTRE® ClearSkin 3XPRESS Beauty Patches
If you’re looking for an easy way to address under-eye darkness or ageing-related skin concerns, the LUSTRE® ClearSkin 3XPRESS Beauty Patches might be a solution worth considering. The ‘bean’-shaped patches fit comfortably under the eyes, an area that often shows the first visible signs of ageing. While Lustre ClearSkin products are usually aimed at those dealing with blemishes, these patches can also benefit older women looking to improve skin texture and brightness around the delicate under-eye area.
BLUE AND RED LED LIGHT
The 3XPRESS Beauty Patches (triangular or bean-shaped) use a combination of blue and red light therapy.
Although red light is primarily known for enhancing blood flow, blue light’s anti-inflammatory properties make it particularly effective in addressing under-eye darkness. Inflammation often contributes to the shadowy appearance beneath the eyes, and by soothing the area, blue light can help diminish this effect. Additionally, it aids in improving circulation in the delicate under-eye region. Increased blood flow (similar to the benefits of ‘tapping’ as above) helps prevent the buildup of blood under the thin skin, reducing the bluish or purplish hue commonly associated with dark circles.
Red light, on the other hand, has been shown to stimulate collagen production, a protein that gives skin its firmness. As we age, collagen production decreases, this is the reason why red light is often hailed as a powerful tool for addressing fine lines and wrinkles.
Using both blue and red light together can help brighten the under-eye area, reduce the appearance of dark circles, and even soften the look of fine lines.
My one tiny gripe about LED face masks is that they don’t fit close enough to the under-eye area. These bean-shaped patches from LUSTRE® are designed with a slight concave curve to fit the natural contours of the face, specifically under the eyes. They can be angled to extend from the inner under-eye area right up to the crow’s feet.
The versatility of these generously sized patches goes beyond the under-eye area. Their curved shape also makes them also effective for use on marionette lines, reaching from nose to chin and any other areas of the face that need addressing, ie upper lip and between the eyebrows.
They are well-made, striking the right balance between firmness and flexibility. They’re firm enough to maintain their shape during use, ensuring that the light (which is very bright) is evenly distributed across the skin.
I’m going on holiday soon, and the included pouch bag is convenient. The power bank is compact and lightweight, so I’ll be taking both with me to continue my treatments while I’m away.
For those dealing with under-eye concerns, the Lustre ClearSkin 3XPRESS patches offer a non-invasive option. The combined use of blue and red light provides multiple benefits, from reducing puffiness and dark circles to potentially helping with the appearance of fine lines over time.
