Children Inspired by Yoga Celebrate Chinese New Year 2020 with Tatty Bumpkin

What day is Chinese New Year?
The 25th January is the peak of the Chinese New Year celebrations this year. At Children Inspired by Yoga we will be joining in the festivities by bringing our very own Chinese New Year story to nurseries and schools throughout the UK.
Chinese New Year is also known as ‘Spring Festival’ as it marks the first day of a brand-new year in the Chinese calendar.Chinese New Year 2020 is the year of the rat!

Preparations
To prepare for the New Year, people first clean their houses to sweep away the bad luck, then they fling open their windows to let the good luck in. Next its off to the busy, bustling market to buy decorations:

Chinese lanterns, bright red and gold as these are lucky colours
Plum trees (a bit like a Christmas trees)
Wind-chimes to bring in the good luck

It may also be time for a haircut and to buy new clothes, red ones, to celebrate the fresh start.
Back home everyone prepares delicious meals, as family meals are a key part of the New Year celebrations. Enormous stir-fries are cooked, oranges, dumplings, and fish are all part of the feast.
Once smartly dressed, people visit their friends and neighbours. They may give children money in special red envelope packets (hongbao) to wish them good luck for the coming year.
Chinese New Year celebrations come to a peak with a New Year parade.  People flood onto the streets wearing red, letting off firecrackers, and lion dancing to scare away the legendary monster!

So we wish you “Gung Hay Fat Choy!” (that’s “Happy New Year” in Chinese!)
