The perfect mash-up
On a Saturday in November, James put his substantial DJ experience to good use. “I’ve been a DJ for more than 20 years, but to feel like I was making a difference while doing it was so rewarding,” says James. “I felt that a Saturday afternoon would get the most views while people are between their weekend activities. The 6 hours went by in a flash. I regret not going for longer now!”
As well as being a means to celebrate Walter’s landmark birthday in December, the fundraising opportunity also honoured someone else very close to James’ heart. “I chose to do the challenge on what would have been my granny’s birthday,” he explains. “She sadly left us a few years ago, so the day was extra special.”
Throughout the set, James shared family photos of his grandad and granny, ensuring the couple were never far from his mind.
Fading out loneliness
James acknowledges that, while Walter was able to spend his special birthday with cherished family members, many older people are spending their daily lives all alone. As viewers waited for his DJ stream to begin, James shared a video from our Christmas appeal – highlighting the realities faced by storytellers like Steve, Michael and Eva, who have often felt lonely at Christmas and all year round.
James knows that Walter’s proud of his efforts. “He’s super happy with the result of raising nearly £500 for such a wonderful initiative,” James tells us. “And I loved that I was able to do something so fun to raise funds for such a great cause.”
